The word radiation itself conjures up dark and disturbing images of sickness and devastation; of nuclear disaster and fall out; there is the definite reverberation of the word cancer, where there is a mention of the word radiation!
Small wonder then, that when you talk about computer radiation, ears prick with unease and the alarm bells go off! What is computer radiation and how harmful is it really?
Is your computer going to cause you to develop cancer? Well in a word No. And if there is the misgiving in the mind that infertility or disease will imperil a happy and healthy life, then banish those misgivings.
The concept of radiation is to be understood in its non-negative connotation; in that all radiation is not bad or debilitating or cancer inducing.
Electromagnetic radiation is the sort that surrounds us and that we are subject to all the time. A common light bulb probably radiates more of this kind of energy.
However there is the apprehension that harmful radiation emits from your computer and that skin is adversely impacted due to this.
There is also the apprehension that eyestrain results from the light that comes from your laptop or computer monitor. These are perhaps charges that have some more basis in fact.
Modern computers, particularly from the more reputed manufacturers are less likely to cause problems of radiation, if however there is the apprehension that computer radiation is likely causing problems then you could do the following:
- Use a filter or a screen to lessen the glare of a computer monitor so that eyes are less fatigued
- Make sure the area where your computer is placed is in a well ventilated area where there is easy circulation of air
- Keep the monitor at a distance of 2 or more feet from the face and the CPU as far from you as possible.
- Check with the manufacturer for the kind of machines that emit lower radiation
- A facial mask or block can be used if there is prolonged skin exposure to computers so that negative effects can be minimized.
- It has been suggested that certain kind of plants, such as cacti can help absorb radiation from computers, and so placing such plants near the area of work may be beneficial.
So while modern technology has made sure that we suffer few if any ill effects from computer radiation, if there is the apprehension of any detrimental effects, then those can easily be taken care of.
